New high speed train lines criss-crossing the earth?....
Just read this http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050626/ap_on_bi_ge/japan_bullet_train article on the new worlds fastest bullet train in the world. With oil prices over $60 a barrel today for the 2nd time in 3 business days, but first in 20 years I foresee these trains becoming popular. As I understand the ever rapidly growing air travel industry is also the most inefficient by far for miles to the gallon per passenger. These high-speed trains between major centres,...which as I understand are far less gas guzzling per passenger mile, should start to pop up everywhere in coming years. Unfortunately the overpriced US & Euro models for these businesses didn't do it a lot of help,...but if the newly planned high speed Beijing-Shanghai gets going,...then I don't think it will be long before we have a high speed Beijing-Harbin or Huhehoute (Inner Mongolia)-Moscow-Berlin-Belgium-London and can get to London almost as fast by train from downtown Beijing as currently by plane.
I'll be looking out for how this industry develops as oil prices continue to rise (which I believe they will). I think its one of the best things that could happen for reducing our climate change impact right now,....and train travel is so much more comfortable than plane!
Eventually solar panels on top to power our laptops and internet inside would make this a lot of fun too :-)
